Six people were injured after two cars crashed on State Highway 1 in the Waikato. Emergency services were called to the crash on the highway near Hickey Rd, near Cambridge at 4.05pm on Saturday. Initial indications were that one car lost control and crossed the centreline, colliding with another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction, Waikato police Senior Sergeant Phil Ruddell said. One person from each of the cars was being airlifted to hospital in a serious condition, he said. A total of six people were injured, the Waikato Westpac Rescue helicopter said in a statement on Saturday evening. Two were understood to be serious and another two suffered moderate injuries. The Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter flew a 25-year-old man to Waikato Hospital with serious abdominal injuries. One person was trapped in the vehicle and had to be cut free by Cambridge firefighters, Fire and Emergency northern shift manager Paul Radden said. The highway was temporarily closed but reopened at 9pm.
