Brazil Registers 44k Deaths and 890k Coronavirus Cases
With 729 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, Brazil reached a total of 44,118 deaths due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. In total, 891,556 people have been infected with the novel coronavirus in the country. The consortium between , O Estado de S. Paulo, Extra, O Globo, G1, and UOL compiled the data from Brazil on a balance sheet that it released at 8 pm on Monday (15). The consortium completes the survey by collecting data from the State Health Departments. In its sixteenth week of the pandemic, Brazil has a rate of 20 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants. The United States, which has the highest absolute death toll and is five weeks ahead of the pandemic, and the United Kingdom, which is in its nineteenth week, have 35 and 62 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, respectively. In Argentina, where the pandemic landed nine days later than in Brazil and which followed a much stricter quarantine, the rate is 1.7 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants. The comparison with other countries is made taking into account the data consolidated by Johns Hopkins University, USA. As of Friday, the institution accounted for more than 7 million cases of the new coronavirus worldwide and 423 thousand deaths. Last Friday (12), Brazil became the second country with the most deaths from Covid-19. Days before, it passed the mark of more than 40 thousand deaths, less than three months after the first death by Covid-19, on March 16, in Sao Paulo. Brazil confirmed its first case of a patient diagnosed with the disease on February 25.
