It was a short-lived record, because the following day (Thursday), was even hotter again , according to the US National Centres for Environmental Prediction. However, the chances are that record could soon be broken, too, with climate scientists predicting further hottest day on records soon to follow. Glaciers respond pretty directly to changes in temperature. So, as temperatures get warmer, glaciers melt even faster. Glaciers melting are one of the biggest contributors to sea levels rising. Why is it so hot at the moment? So the big one is just this is a long-term trend of temperatures increasing. We know temperatures have risen about 1.1 degrees (on average) since about 100 years ago. But on top of that, we have entered an El Nino year - in New Zealand [that] actually makes temperatures maybe a little cooler than usual, but globally it makes temperatures warmer than usual.
